3 Ways To Minimize The Distastefulness Of Oil Pulling

Posted on: 8 March 2016

Oil pulling, or swishing oil, is one way to clean your teeth. As the oil comes in contact with the different surfaces inside the mouth, it traps oral bacteria. When the oil is released from the mouth, the bacteria are released with it. The longer you swish the oil about your mouth, the more oral bacteria are trapped.

Due to the liquid nature of the oil, it is able to effectively reach crevices and tight spaces that are difficult for a toothbrush or dental floss to access. Still, it can be difficult to oil pull for 15 to 20 minutes several times a week. Here are a few tips to minimize the distastefulness of oil pulling:

Mini Sessions

Instead of trying to keep the oil in your mouth for 15 consecutive minutes, choose to spit the oil out every time you feel the need to and start over.

Instead of attempting consecutive minutes, choose cumulative ones. This can help you not to gag as you are swishing the oil about your mouth. In addition, since inhaling the oil into the lungs can cause pulmonary issues, it is best to release the oil as you need to instead of forcing yourself to keep it in place. Doing so can increase the likelihood of choking on the oil and possibly aspirating some of it.

Embrace Distractions

Sometimes it is easier to perform a monotonous activity, such as oil pulling, while you are doing something else. Make it a part of your morning routine by pairing it with other activities, such as preparing your lunch for the day. If you are busy doing something else as you oil pull, you're less likely to become impatient.

Make it Tasteful

Oils such as olive oil, sesame oil and coconut oil are often used for oil pulling. These oils do have a mild flavor that some people find palatable. However, they tend to be bland for others. To help you enjoy your oil-pulling session a bit more, consider adding a few drops of peppermint oil. The peppermint oil can help add enjoyable flavor to the oil, and it can also help freshen your breath.

Even if you are using additional oral health measures, such as oil pulling, to protect your teeth and gums, it is still important to have you are teeth examined by a dental professional at least once every six months. If you have not had a dental appointment in the past six months, schedule an appointment with a dentist in your area. Contact a company like Pike Lake Dental Center for more info.
