3 Affordable At Home Teeth Whitening Techniques

Having teeth that are discolored can make you self-conscious of your smile when around other people. If professional teeth whitening is not within your budget, you may be considering treatments you can do at home on your own. These three techniques use things you may already have around your home as well.

Coconut Oil Pulling

It may seem strange, but you can actually whiten your teeth using coconut oil. The idea is that the lauric acid found in the coconut oil will eliminate the bacteria in plaque, which is what makes your teeth look yellow. It works because the bacteria gets stuck in the coconut oil from swishing it around.

All you need is a single tablespoon of coconut oil to do it. Prior to brushing your teeth, swish the coconut oil for approximately 15–20 minutes. Finish by brushing your teeth, which will help remove any coconut oil remaining inside your mouth. It will not produce immediate results, but you can keep repeating the process until you notice the difference.

Lemon Juice And Baking Soda Paste

Instead of using traditional toothpaste for brushing your teeth, you can use a paste that is made out of lemon juice and baking soda. You do not need an exact recipe to create the paste, just keep adding lemon juice to a couple teaspoons of baking soda until it looks like a paste.

Start by wiping off any excess saliva on your teeth using a paper towel. Dip your toothbrush into the fresh paste, and apply it to your teeth by thoroughly coating all the surfaces. You should only leave it on your teeth for about a minute, and then rinse it away. Leaving the paste on your teeth for too long can damage the enamel.

Using Fruits

Even if you are not a huge fan of fruits, they can be a great way to naturally whiten teeth. While some fruits will brush against the teeth surface while chewing, you can also rub them directly against your teeth.

Strawberries contain malic acid that helps erode stains, and when you combine them with baking soda, the mixture can be very effective. The crunchiness of apples helps it rub plaque away, but the fruit also will stimulate your saliva production and naturally fight the bacteria on your teeth. Carrots work in a similar way of rubbing against your teeth because of how crunchy they are.

If these techniques don't do the trick, you may need the help of professional teeth whitening at the dentist to get your teeth a few shades whiter.
